Mandar,
> Toshiba?
- From experience, Toshiba has proved to be one of the best laptops ever
in terms of hardware support in GNU/Linux. Almost all of their hardware
is standards compliant and they all work fine, including the built in
modem and black magic stuff like suspend to RAM, etc.

> 0. Which of these are easily available in Kolkata?
Toshiba is marketed in India by HCL and is pretty much available everywhere.

Well, Don't go for anything less than a Pentium-M / Centrino. If you are
power hungry, you can even go for an AMD Turion processor.

I have seen GNU/Linux working flawlessly on a wide-screen Compaq.

That's a big issue. While 2.8 - 3 Kg might look pretty light at first,
trust me, it's really a pain when you travel a lot with it. The ideal
weight according to me should be in the 1.5 Kg category but that will
again take you to the ultra-portable category and may also cost a bomb.

My advice, stay away from Acer. IMHO they use pretty much substandard
hardware. Thinkpads are the champs in this regard.

Don't settle for anything less than 512MiB. If possible buy the laptop
with an extra 512MiB stick so that you don't have to worry much in the
future.

>>My vote is for Thinkpads - I have a T42p - rock solid. Works more or less

I agree. The T42p is really good.

> Should one worry about the Lenovo vs. IBM deal?
I don't think so :)
