its a problem of bygone era. even firefox and open-office can have the look
and feel of KDE4 with a few tweaks. If you are a pro-photographer, digikam
in KDE with kipi plugins is far more superior than f-spot in gnome. Keyboard
layout switcher is simple in KDE wrt the cluttered interface of gnome.

you can have uniform look for your QT and GTK apps. just check this wiki:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Uniform_look_for_QT_and_GTK_apps

for firefox: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Firefox
for openoffice: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OpenOffice

(ps: I use go-openoffice which has a few enhancements than the vanila
version. so the openoffice tweaks, i have applied were for go-openoffice and
this in turn was in modular KDE or KDEmod. You may not find this in the wiki
entry.)
