aptitide can search through packages using a particular pattern, for
example listing all installed packages or dependent packages. I don't
know how to search for dependent packages of a package that are not
installed. If anyone knows, please reply. Anyway, you will find the
following information useful.
apt-cache depends <package-name> shows the dependent packages of the
given package. aptitude search '~i!~E' shows all the installed packages
in the system.
A neat output, showing only package names on both occasions can be
produced by-
aptitude search '~i!~E' | grep -v "i A" | cut -d " " -f 4
to get only the names of all packages installed in the system
apt-cache depends <package-name> | tail -n +2 | cut -d: -f 2
to get only dependent package names for the package
<package-name>
May be, you can redirect the output of the above commands and get the
differences between them to see what packages need to be downloaded.
