It is a router. I have used it for file sharing, printer sharing etc. I
even used it to SSH logins to my friend's GNU + Linux system using
virtual server (or port forwarding) setup in his BSNL router. This was
very handy as I had to just sit in my home, login to his PC and then fix
things he had broken.

Going through this thread, I am not quite sure of your need. If your
need is file sharing, you can set up Samba. If you just need to access
your Windows file from your GNU + Linux system, you don't need Samba.
Just share your Windows drives, Go to Places->Network->Windows Network
and your Windows machine will be shown there.
