The BSNL provided device for broadband internet connection is a modem cum
router. It is configured as a router by default. I think you need to use the
router as a bridge between your two computers. And since both are connected
to the modem you can surf independently. And modem cum router is the default
gateway to the internet. Take a look...

This is your ( text only :) ) network diagram. T1 and T2 are the systems
here and you have the GateWay as the common point. You may have turned on
the DHCP server in the router so that each session is alloted an IP. Thus
using IPs are not ideal. So use 'hostnames'. To connect and login to the
other system. You can use any ssh based application to login to other system
and can use ftp based apps for file transfer...
