If the BIOS works fine, then were you not able to boot a live-usb
session at all?

BIOS works fine. It even detects the HDD. But I was unable to boot even
from a live-usb. After I removed the HDD from the laptop, I am able to
boot from live-usb, confirming that the issue was with HDD.

Just to be sure - Were you able to get a BIOS boot device selection screen while you booted with the hard disk connected? That is, do you mean to say that you selected USB/CD as the first boot device and your system still tried to boot from the HDD? Or is it that the option for boot device selection is absent?
