To the best of my understanding, x86 BIOS allow only 4 primary 
partitions per hard disk.  One of the primary can be extended within 
which one can create a lot of logical partitions.

By "deselected" you mean greyed out or disabled?   If so, that is indeed 
strange.

On the CLI, what is the output of "sudo fdisk -l"?

the Ubuntu LiveCD.
