This is not a suggestion for a novice computer user!

I think the problem is likely to be the use of some kind of
alternative partition table rather than the standard MBR.

If it indeed that case that the Ubuntu installation CD cannot
recognise the partition table and/or NTFS partitions, then you should
check their Installation Guide for information on this.

If no such problems are mentioned then please file a bug report with
them as some novice users (who may not even know how much disk space
they have) may erroneously erase their partition table data.
