Early on (2.4.x days) one could define partitions upto /dev/sdX11 (where 
X is scsi disk id) on SCSI disks.  Without the listing from "sudo 
fdisk -l" we really cannot help your friend.

If he cannot do this then it is difficult to analyze what his problem.  
Perhaps he can install another disk and install Ubuntu on it?
