There is a third type - consultants who make a living out of Linux 
support and solutions.   IMO, they need to know at least the major 
distros Debian, CentOS (RHEL), openSUSE (Novell/SUSE), Ubuntu, 
Mandriva.  Today, one can standardize on one distro as "host OS" 
install the rest as VMs.
