Hmm, interesting. Could you please elaborate ? You should not have to do that at all. If you do, that's a bug and you should report it. However, lets try and debug this first ...
a. What sort of connection do you have to do this for ?
b. What tool do you use to make the connection, NetworkManager/wvdial ?
c. Do you have any other connections active ?[1]
d. Could you please paste the output of 'route -n', before and after you've changed the default route ?

[1] one possibility where you /might/ have to reset the routes (i just thought of this), is if you are connected to an ethernet connection using NetworkManager and dial out using wvdial, in which case, i /think/ what might happen is NM reset the default route -- all this is just guess work tho.
