I am on gnome, and there is no NetworkManager applet (I remember the fedora

 f. Add a new wired connection (the good thing about NM is you can have
  multiple wired connections 'configurations' for the same device, and can
  seamlessly switch between them -- just name them differently)
 g. try it out and report back.

so how do I get the NetworkManager applet to show? I rebooted, and had to add
the default route by hand.

Ok, here is what you do:
a. execute as root:

$ service NetworkManager restart

if that doesn't show up the network manager applet in your panel, execute (as the logged in user):

$ nm-applet

if that errors out ..copy/paste the error here. If it doesn't and the applet does show up go the 'System' entry in the main panel and then "Preferences->Startup Applications". Scroll down and search for Network Manager and enable it. If no such entry exists, click the "Add" button and enter:

Name: Network Manager
Command: nm-applet --sm-disable
Comment: whatever

after the applet shows up do (f) and (g) above.

cheers,
- steve
