The current crop of Atom boards have the 425 and 525 CPUs @ 1.8GHz. They are multi threaded; 425 has one core with 2 threads, 525 two cores + two thread per core (total 4). Gigabyte has boards with IDE and 4SATA II ports, and copper Gb LAN :) So yes, conceivably one could make a small office file server, a router or a firewall or an asterisk PBX box. IMO, the boards have the horsepower to drive small enterprise grade apps. > What are all the difficulties on that? On the other hand, I have had board failure issues (the first gen. ones from Intel) - so I would not recommend them for mission critical apps. Avoid the fanless solutions from Intel - they are meant for Nettop setups and you could run into thermal issues, especially if you choose the Nettop cabinets. I would add to other's comments - 1. First define your requirements 2. The look for the right solution.
