one mistake a lot of us foss people make is in not realising that different people learn in different ways. This has been the subject of innumerable studies and basically people are divided into those 1.who learn best by themselves, 2. who learn best when taught verbally, 3. who learn best when taught by example, 4. who learn best by reading manuals, 5. who learn best by going through tutorials etc etc. - in the old days of foss, self taught was the only way. So the vast majority of foss people around today are the self-taught ones. This is no longer necessarily true. One cannot generalise from one's own experience and prescribe to others blindly.
