I have had the same experience, sleep is very very bad, but
turning off and restarting solves a lot of annoying problems.
Before turning off I go to the finder and manually shut down
every app I have been using. Just turning it off without
doing that seems to cause trouble, I don't have a clue why.
Maybe it is just in my mind, but I seem to have fewer
strange problems, especially with netscape, if I shut it
down before turning off the machine.
