I'm a relative newbie, so my opinion probably doesn't count for much,
but in my meager experience I've come to the conclusion that turning
my iMac off has resolved problems, rather than caused them. It's
when I put it to sleep that strange, undesired things start happening.
I've also learned that HOW you turn off the computer is also important.
When I shut it down, I also turn off the power strip that the iMac is
plugged into. I get the impression that doing this makes
for a more complete turn off, so that when I boot up the next time, it's
like starting with a clean slate - the cobwebs are cleared away.
When I turn off the power strip, I hear a "click" when I boot up the next
time - this doesn't happen if the power stip is still on. Maybe this "click"
has some connection with clearing out the cobwebs, who knows.
In any case, since I began this routine, the hang ups, freezes, etc.
have been far, far fewer.
Just my 2 cents worth. Larry
