Larry,
That can be a dangerous practice & this is why. If you have a true surge
protector & not just an elaborate extension cord type of power strip, you
are shutting off it's ability to protect from surges when you turn it off.
In other words, the power on the strip is also for the surge protector, not
just the devices you have plugged into it.
I suppose if it's not a true surge protector, then it won't really matter.
However, not having your equipment plugged into a good surge protector (I
prefer APC myself) is also a bad idea.
