You, my friend, have run into the famous early G3 first 8 gigabytes problem.
Early G3's (including early iMacs -- like my Rev. B) will not recognize a
system unless it is in the first 8 gigs of a hard disk. You *MUST*
repartition to have at least two partitions, the first being 8 gigs or
under, and install the system on that partition.

Then your flashing question mark will go away.
