At least that is what I do. Then, even if things go completely off the rail, I still have my main files and would not be afraid to re-install and start over again. You will not notice a huge difference from 8.5 to 8.6. There are some changes in OS 9. Obviously the biggest leap is to OS X. I might suggest that you get your hands on a good OS 9 and/or OS X manual BEFORE you upgrade to them so you can get an idea of what things will look like and feel more prepared. David Pogue's Missing Manual books are great. For OS X, I got the "Little OS X Book" by Robin Williams. Although, it is anything but little. There are many other OS X books but for clear, easy information without all the technical stuff strewn about, Williams book is excellent. One last thing...you need to make sure that you have enough RAM etc before you upgrade to OS X. I would suggest at least 256 MB RAM. Anyway, good luck !
