It's painless! Trust me. I did it twice on my old iMac 266. It's totally transparent to you except the "About This Mac" dialog changes to reflect the new version number and the system is more robust.
Have you updated your ROM file to 1.4 as well??? BTW, a lot of current apps are now Carbonized and can only run on if you have OS 8.6.
