The short answer is Apple only supports a total of 128MB in this machine, and they only support chips up to 128MB in size. Apple's Knowledge Base may have the answer. Article #43102 contains the specs for the Rev A iMac, the article can be found at <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43102> The max memory for this unit, stated in the article, is 128MB, and the largest chip it is rated for is 128MB. Plenty of people I know have installed up to 512MB without problems. Others can't seem to beat their way past the 128MB barrier. It seems to me that installing the most up-to-date firmwares and ROM updates for the computer is the key, but I haven't confirmed this. Check out article #58174 @ <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum= 58174> entitled "iMac: When to Install Available Updaters". Of definite note is the Mac OS ROM 1.0 update. It's also feasible (even probable) that she just got a bad chip. Try asking the seller to replace it, and see if the new chip performs any different. -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
