The first iMacs (tray-loaders) are known to have defective CD drives. Friend of mine 
had that too with a 333 Mhz iMac. I bought a Matsushita CDRW and put that in it.
Also you must be lucky you found an OS CD on the Dutch eBay, because such items are 
rarely sold here. I also want to say that if you update your OS you also have to 
update the apps you use, such as Virtual PC. Check http://www.connectix.com and
http://www.versiontracker.com. BTW if you do not use the 1400 powerbook anymore, I am 
in need for a PowerBook at the moment....
Final word, if you really want to try a Mac w/o problems buy a new one. If you do buy 
a secondhand Mac, first do some research, because it is well known at the
moment that the first iMacs (Rev.A-D, 233-333 Mhz) have problems.

For a software firewall: Norton Personal Firewall; or Netbarrier. Or buy a hardware 
firewall.
