It's the Unix disk repair utility. Think of it as disk Dr. on steroids. The advantage
is that it
can run on the disk in use. It has to be accessed through the console mode. (All black
screen with
nothing but letters. The mouse is non functional in console.) The easiest way to get
to the
console is use the Terminal. Terminal is in your utilities folder. When you open
terminal it will
give you a new window with a cursor prompt. You type commands into this to control the
computer's
functions. To reach the console window you would type "sudo shutdown now" (without the
quotes) and
hit enter. It will ask you for your administrator password. type your password and hit
enter. I few
moments you will be presented with an all black screen and a local host prompt. Type
"fsck -y"
(without the quotation marks) and hit enter. (note the space before the dash) The
computer will
then scan all your drives looking for errors.
If it found problems and says "Dale's computer was modified", run fsck -y again.
Eventually you
will get to a wishy washy statement that says "Dale's computer appears to be OK" just
type exit and
hit enter and it will take you back to GUI.
A very useful utility. If you don't have one? I would recommend getting a copy of
O'Reilly's "OS X
The Missing Manual", or other similar manual. This and lots of other useful tips and
hacks for OS X
are well explained in much clearer detail.
