When you're sending a reply, you should remove all the extraneous
material, leaving just what you want to reply to. The reader can
skim over the quote, then read your comments with the context of
your reply fresh in their mind. Finally, after your comments,
they find your signature, which usually includes any contact
information that you find is identical on every message. That
leaves you without that nasty bolus of footer information that the
reader must skim even though there isn't anything relevant there.

I usually enter my name myself (even back when I used a signature
file) because I use a different one for formal and informal
occasions (e.g., sending a complaint letter or dropping a quick
note to my spouse).

Of course, the nice thing about computers is you can use them the
way *you* want to, but it's sometimes nice to hear what others do
so you have a bigger universe of choices to pick from.
