I see your point.  I had forgotten about the way it was in the old days,
when you had to pay for every minute you were online.  I've never even used
the phone modem on this iMac.  I don't even know if it works!  On the other
hand, when I did have to pay by the hour, I used to use a function where it
would sign on just long enough to send and retrieve my e-mail.  Then I did
my reading and composing offline.  It was a nice, money-saving feature.
