Exactly. Claris Emailer, which I use, doesn't make links clickable, but if I hilite them and command-click them, the Mac OS makes them live. Most more modern email clients (Emailer hasn't been updated since January 22, 1998) support live links, although they don't all see them the same way. For instance, some email clients will turn both http://lowendmac.com and <http://lowendmac.com> into active links, but some will only turn the one between < and > into links. This is just one of several reasons we ask people to always enclose links between less than and greater than signs. A similar nagging problem is the brain dead AOL email client, which doesn't recognize that the "mailto" in <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> *isn't* part of the email address. We have to put a note in the list FAQ and in the footers to remind AOLers to remove that bit when they use one of our email links.
