1. You don't WANT to apply italics, bold etc to your email messages. Most mailing lists (like this one) will reject these out of hand. Usenet can't take them either, and many people's email client's can't handle it either. Email is for plain text. 2. (Assuming you insist) How is it "clunky?" It works like any other word processor I've ever encountered -- command-b for bold, command-i for italic, command-u for underline etc. You can even colour text by using shift-command-c. Right there in the menubar is the menu item "Format" and the very first item is font choice (or you can simply press command-t). You can even choose alignment if you like.
