First of all, do you know for a fact that they are the same file and not two
different files?

I ask because it sounds like you have an image embedded in the .htm file.
The "little red stop sign with an X" usually indicates a missing graphic.

So, they may be a text file (the .doc that opens in Word) and a graphic that
is in an .htm file (for no readily apparent reason).
