I found CDRs work in some drives but not others. Something in or out of spec. If you have a CD burner, or a friend does, trying cloning the disk and seeing if the copy works. Otherwise, can you access the 8500s CD drive through your network from the iMac? If you can do it under VPC, problem solved. If not, copy all the files via your network to the iMac with MacOS and then run VPC and try to install from the iMac hard disk -- should work, most installers don't care where they are started from. I've done this on PC with dodgy CDs that work intermittently.
