Login passwords won't help if someone has stolen your computer -- they can just pull the hard disk and mount it as a slave drive to another computer and bypass your software. Encryption is the classic answer, but you have to encrypt EVERYTHING, otherwise data can be recovered from the waste space. Otherwise you might consider an external drive that you can detach and lock up separately (preferably also encrypt this).
