Another encryption option is GPG, aka GNU Privacy Guard. It's a PGP compatible public key encryption software. This also facilitates secure sharing of files (with people you trust.) Setting a login password is cute. So is setting up a password to get out of the screen saver. But security is much more than automated commands, it's a way of thinking. You have to know what you want to secure, and why. Having a few passwords will stop 'trustworthy' people from 'accidentally' spying on your data. Setting a firmware password doesn't stop someone from removing your hard drive and mounting it another computer. AES-128 bit encryption will slow someone down more, but it will be cracked some day. Each is a small step along the way, but if someone WANTS your data, they'll get it (someday.) The trick is to make it harder.
