These are lithium batteries, they can't be recharged. But they last longer
if the Mac has power as then mains power is used rather than battery to get
it started. 

I have a Quadra with a dead battery (the same 3.6V lithium type). It fails
to boot when I first power it up, but if I then flick the power switch it
starts after apparently using mains power to charge up the capacitor. Have
to reset the date every time of course. 

I think this must be the only component that is standard from 68k Macs
through to present day.
