Yes, we were hit by lightning here two years ago. Lost two color TVs, the telephone and the answering machine and some light bulbs, along with the vinyl siding on the shed. It hit a tree in our yard, jumped to the shed and into the ground and up through either the ground wire or electric wires and into the house. Several neighbors' electronics were fried as well. Surprisingly, the Mac (at the time, a PowerMac 7600) wasn't affected. It was plugged in to a cheap power strip, but turned off. The modem line was still connected as well. Go figure. But now, I've upgraded to a 1,000 joule surge suppressor for the Mac, and all the TVs, and if I'm here when a storm hits, I unplug it from the wall. So, if the battery fails before I retire this iMac, it's not that big a deal to replace it. I have two or three I've pulled from a couple of LCs that are still good, and I've already had this thing apart twice now, so I know how to do it. Gerry P.S. - just for the heck of it, I pulled out my old SE, and started it up. It still has the correct date, and it hasn't been plugged in in two years!
