I'm on the verge of 10.2.3, but not yet (I have 10.2 on my PowerBook).
I haven't been able to try safari yet, but if Apple really wants to
dedicate resources to this project, isn't it safe to assume that it will
eventually be good and highly integrated to Apples iApps?
Safari will run with 10.2, runs better with 10.2.3. I agree it's a nice piece of software for a beta effort. It works well. The only thing I cannot do with it is electronic banking ( I can't with OmniWeb either) as my bank only recognizes Netscape and IE.
 Why else play
around with it in the first place? I suppose it'll be possible for them
to lose interest and drop it, but isn't it even likely that they're
preparing to develop a 3G friendly browser for the new tiny device
rumored to be in development?
When Apple's good, they're VERY good, no?
I think a lot of the Safari, "good, great, lousy, so so" remarks have to do with personal preferences? I don't used tabbed browsing so the lack of it doesn't matter to me. If I was an avid user of tabbed browsers then Safari would not meet my needs.

For me, it's a great browser. Faster than anything else I have found on my, dial up, connection in the boonies. Maybe I would not be as fond of it if I was using a broadband connection?
