As I recall compression was used to establish high speeds for PPP or  
SLIP.
Used it at first then came modems that didn't need it (if memory serves)
What standard are you using? have tried all? V.34 V.90 V.92?
default is V.90.
Can't remember which one is for what but had to play with this when I  
had to
  remote login at my last job.
That was with 10.1.5. and I had to turn off compression 'cause the  
other side
did not like it. What did modem status show?
