Rebuilding the desktop is mainly for keeping your icons connected...so 
if you start getting a bunch of blank icons then you can rebuild and 
make them colorful again. Norton utilities is a good purchase to run 
every month or so. Speed disk and run the Disk Utility. Kept my imac 
233 running for 3 years with no lost files, no hard drive crashes.
