Gary,

This error is not hardware related. Its a problem that can be solved  
with  the right  utility. Disk FirstAid might even be able to fix it if 
you startup from another system folder, like the one on your iMac 
installer disk. You probably should get another disk repair utility 
too, because there are a number of problems that DFA cant fix.

This sounds like an extension conflict, tho  it's  1 i've  never  heard 
of.  Holding down the shift key during start-up turns off all unneeded 
extensions. You can isolate it by turning off extensions in the 
Extensions Manager  control panel until you  have fixed  the problem. 
But,  you have to learn what extensions are needed and which arnt. 
There are some programs that will help you with this, like Conflict 
Catcher. A demo is available for download at versiontracker.com i 
believe. The Mac's built-in Help function may also give u some guidance 
on this. Have you checked there yet?
