One method I use to prevent spam is to guard my email addresses.
I use addresses from sneakemail.com (as for instance to subscribe to this
list) for any which may be exposed on the web, or to sign up for
subscriptions, (to online newspapers, etc). The basic service is free. I go
to the site, click to create a new address, give it a name, and give that.
By default mail to that address will be forwarded to my normal account. If
however it starts to collect spam, I can filter it (white or blacklist), or
just delete that address and never worry about it again.
About a month ago I got spam to the address I use here, so I killed it and
resubscribed under a new one.
