I use Mail Siphon II for the very same purpose: http://www.maliasoft.com. I first check my mail addresses with this app, trash the spam, then d/l mail with Netscape 7. And I created the mail address I'm using now just for the mail lists I'm subscribed to. Don't get any spam on this one.
