I'm wondering if most of these aren't problems that can be fixed by DiskWarrior etc. Months ago I was having problems with 9.2.x refusing to boot but after a couple reinstalls, a session with DW cleared it up. No problems since. This is an important issue for many Mac users for a variety of reasons. Some people simply don't want to learn a new set of rules and techniques for a new operating system (hopefully, if you are reading Tech Tails, this is not YOUR reason), others don't want to pay for upgrading their OS 9-native applications (pretty understandable), and others use essential applications that do not have native OS X versions (think Quark XPress). Moving forward, Apple plans on phasing out OS 9 entirely. Already a large portion of Apple's product line will not boot in OS 9. For example, the new 12-inch PowerBook will not boot in OS 9. I installed 9 from an Install CD, and there were no warnings that the installation was not successful, but when I went to the Startup Disk option in the System Preferences, there was no 9 listed. I also tried to boot directly from the CD. No dice. If all you want to do is run some non-memory-intensive programs, than you may use the Classic environment to run OS 9-native applications, but this will not work for anything that requires processing muscle. The Classic environment runs in software emulation, which results in a significant slowdown in usable processing speed.
