With Jaguar (10.2.x), OS 9 is not needed at all, and
"installs itself" 
as
you put it.

Actually, you can install any version of X with or
without 9 installed. Simply slip the disc in, open the
application (installer) and it will ask if you want to
restart the computer in X installer mode. (not sure of
name of installer mode) But it is in X. Simply  click
yes and machine reboots to the disc.
