What if you hold down the option key when you restart? I know that at 
some point apple instituted a way of selecting the startup 
partition/disk via holding down the option key during restart. A purple 
screen pops up with any partition that has a bootable system, including 
a CD if it's in the drive. And you select one.  That works on my 
powerbook, i've never tried it in an imac. Maybe that's helpful..... 
then again, maybe not. Best wishes.
