Those on this list may recall I was having problems booting up my eMac
in OS 9.2
Sometimes it would boot and sometimes it wouldn't.
A friend, and long time mac user made comment on the telephone to me
that my attutide to all things computer may have been a direct bearing
on my problems.
He also noted my attitude to all things mechanical was also very similar.
He noted my verison of the combined OS 9 and OS 10 Compact Disk
probably means the computer swaps files back and forth between the two
operating systems, with nary a care between them.
He noted I was worrying that maybe somewhere along the way
the two operating systems would clash, and the system would die.
Told me to ignore that troubling thought; not easy bit do it.
So fine said I ignore it...
So far so good.
Now I come from the old school that believes Microsoft is like
most other big businesses and should really be killed off and destroyed,
or made less domineering.
That said, have long been against Microslop's way of doing things and
to that end tried to avoid using anything made or even derived from MS.
So once the eMac was up and running erased as one is able to do, ERASED
Internet Exploder, the only MS application and all other MS files on the
single hard drive.
I use i-Cab for web browsing, PowerMail for e-mail both in 9.2 (was 8.6).
Nice thing about Apple, destroy same and it shall be gone, forever one hopes.
Decided to go into OS X, more for curiousity sakes than anything.\
Computer promptly locked up solid.
In the upper left corner of the boot up screen with the little
gear wheel frozen solid underneath outline of the apple with a bite in it
was the following phrase, white letters on a black background
repeated twice followed by a third line:
/etc/master.passwd: no such file or directory
/etc/master.passwd: no such file or directory
sh-2.05a#
oh and the computer was totally frozen.
OK, this happened once last week, had to carry the computer back to the
dealer some 15 miles easto f here.
They blinked, nad weren ot sure what theproblem was o ther than the
computer had gone to UNIX terminal mode.
They reloaded the OS X operating system and everything was just fine. No
charge.
And everything was just fine until yesterday (Sunday march tooth) when I
decided to go back into OSX
that didn't have Internet Explorer.
The computer locked up again.
Well this time, figured, leave it, best to ignore the contraption.
I was not in a favourbale mood in any event.
This morning figured, can't make things worse, so mouse button down, turn
on machine (had to turn it off by pulling the line cord beofre)
dropped in the install disc, turned off the machine by the power button
on the side, turned on the machine, holding down the Cee
button and did a complete and full reinstall of the CD on to the hard
drive. The system stored my files in a folder entitled
Old Applications.
Everything is just fine.
So a summary?
1. Microslop (in some form or another) has to reside on the computer,
although under 8.6 on my 350 Mhz iMac
it wasn't even allowed on the property.
2. I tend to believe the minimal aspect is the way to go, so would much
prefer to have only 9.22 or less on any computer.
(on my old windows machine, had DOS 6.2 for the longest time only to
get pushed into W95 first edition by dint of the machine needing
an upgrade, and Windows OS tends to spreads its tentacles into every
bloody program on the hard drive, not so Apple)
3. As same person from the telephone noted, I tend to be a minimalist at
heart, so when the iMac died it still had 5.6 gig free
on a 6 gig hard drive. Large hard drives are a waste, on people like.
me. Again of the old school. If it isn't needed, it gets trashed.
4. My own feelings is, well its working now, the big 14 inch by 11 inch
screen is nice, but do I need same?
I use a computer for typing (ok keyboarding for the techno twits)
columns for two or three magazines, some web browsing and some reading of
newsgroups, that's it!
The rest of the extras are a waste. I don't use the computer for getting
at my banking services, I don't own a digital anything, I record my audio
tapes on a Revox B77 open reel machine, and have a Sony Beta machine for
video (and lots of extra blank tapes).
Maybe I am stuck in the past, but who cares? Well meaning relatives gave
me a digital camera for Christmas, it is bascially a point and shoot
camera, much like my Pentax Spotmatic with screw-mount lenses..It's nice
but why?
5. And here's the crunch, I guess. As long as the Mac keeps going
perhaps I'll keep it, but how long may it run? I did purchase Applecare
this time round, but realistically I had hoped the iMac was the last Mac
I'd have to buy; it died. Maybe I should flog the emac and go back to an
iMac, with a fan and 8.6?
