All well and good. Though when we're talking partitions we're also  
talking
about mounted partitions. Only mounted partitions are always accessible.
When they're not... it's not an issue.
Mac auto-mounts disks and makes them available system-wide.
OS X and 9 have this special thing going but it's pretty much a special  
case.
My Linux and Mac OS 9 partitions didn't know each other but resided on  
the
same disk. Never a problem there. Only partition active/accessible at a  
time.

Just to emphasize Kyle's point...

Back when I first got my Bondi iMac, I connected it with a crossover  
ethernet cable to my Performa 6220.  I was using the iMac and received  
an e-mail with a WordPerfect document attached.  I absent-mindedly  
double clicked on the document to open it before it occurred to me  
that WordPerfect was on the Performa, but had not been loaded onto the  
iMac yet.  As I was scolding myself for the oversight, I noticed that  
WordPerfect had launched and that the document was open in front of > me.
