There is no blending of anything here.

This is no different than having an older Mac whose hard drive has both 
OS-7.5 and OS-8.6 loaded on it.  One could hardly describe such a set 
up as being a blending of two operating systems.  The Mac is simply 
capable of running one system or the other, depending upon which was 
used as the startup system.  In order to function, each needs (and 
uses) its own supporting files.  Each system maintains its own 
identity, and is equally vulnerable to the intentional (or 
unintentional) deletion of files, whether they be critical or not.
