I ran across a situation recently that illustrated an advantage to partitioning. On my B&W G3 I have a single 40gb drive, partitioned 20/20 with Jaguar on 1 and OS9.2.2 on the other partition. I decided to overclock the processor one day, but mistakenly put in settings that the computer did not support. The result of this was that the hard drive had become unbootable. So, I set the jumpers correctly and was able to start from a System 9 installer CD. I couldnt mount the original partitions. So, I used Norton Systemworks CD to start and it managed to fix the partition that had Jaguar (OSX 10.2.2) on it. Could see files on OS9 partition, but couldnt fix it well enough for me to start from it. However, by using the Disk Utility in Jaguar, I was able to fix the OS9 partition completely and it now works normally. I was even able to do the overclock using the proper jumper settings. If I'd had only one partition, it's possible I would have had to initialize the drive, and go through the long process of re-installing system and backups. I found it especially interesting that the Jaguar Disk Utility was able to fix the OS9 partition, when Norton's couldn't. Of course, Disk Utility could also be run from the Jaguar install CD, so perhaps things would have worked out the same anyway. My inclination is to keep the B&W partitioned as it is, but on my iMac flat panel, I will leave it as originally configured, with 1 partition. Perhaps after enough time using both schemes, I'll figure out which is really best. tafkar No thank you Delmar, a third of a gopher would only rouse my apetite, without bedding it back down. --Ulysses Everett McGill -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
