In the past, I've had the whole drive get totally screwed up as just one partition, to the point where I had to just wipe the drive and start all over again. So, I figured that with partitions, if something screws up, it would (hopefully) only affect one partition. Knock on wood, it's been running like a champ ever since partitioning - something it wouldn't do before partitioning, as I wasn't aware of the 8 gig rule at the time.
