I don't know why (except under some very unusual circumstances) that would be necessary. A hosed system does not mean you need to reformat the drive (or partition). That was just a temporary requirement with early releases of OS-X. With respect to OS-9 and earlier, just boot from an install disk, drag the defective System folder to the trash, run Disk FirstAid, and reinstall the system from the CD. If the drive had "damaged" tracks, you'd need to reformat the whole thing anyway, including those partitions. I did originally have different systems on their own partitions, but it seemed that no matter how much I tried to plan ahead, invariably I'd end up wishing I had made one partition just a little smaller (or larger). It's a good bet that one would need to contend with disk maintenance more often than with disk failure. One drawback of partitioning is that you will get "tight" on disk space sooner than had you not partitioned. Disk maintenance (housekeeping) becomes increasingly difficult as free space declines. Don't get me wrong, there are certainly valid reasons one might want (or need) to partition a drive. But unless there is a specific need, partitioning just brings extra overhead. If you think you need another drive partition, you're probably a candidate for a second physical drive. John at Wood-n-Shavings, Inc.
