Hello all... Recently, I went to work on updating my brother's a 266MHz Grape Rev C tray-laoding iMac from Mac OS 8.6 to 9.2. I've been (and continue to be) an avid Mac user, fan and developer, and I'm comfortable when it comes to mucking around in the OS or the hardware.
The nightmare began when I sat down at the computer, inserted the Mac OS 9 system CD and ran the installer. It presented me with a message noting stale firmware that needed to be updated and the installer could be found on the same CD. "No problem," I thought. "I'll get this taken care of in a few minutes, look like a hero to my brother, and be home in time for dinner." I launched the firmware updater, carefully read the directions, and restarted the computer. I got the long tone and the firmware update progress bar appeared at the bottom. Now things got ugly. The bar progressed to about 5% and stopped. Then the blinking disk folder icon appeared but the progress bar is still on the screen, not moving. "Uh oh," is all I can say. I let the computer sit for about 20 minutes, then repeated the firmware restart instructions, but the damage is apparently done. Now the iMac doesn't do anything when I press the power button on the CPU except glow orange. I can hear the harddrive and CRT power-up, but the screen just remains black. No icons, no Open Firmware mode, no start-up tones, nothing. Per instructions I've found elsewhere, I've taken the logic board out, taken out the MB battery (which is fresh, I've checked it with a multimeter), swapped memory, and pressed the Cuda switch. Nothing. It appears my only recourse now is to buy a replacement logic board on eBay. Anyone else have any suggestions? TIA, Tim -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
