You have a lot of options.  The best one is to take that Logic board out and
put it into another iMac that has an active system folder on the HD.  Then
update the firmware there.

Another thing that I do all the time (I'm a Service Tech) in the shop is
pull the Ram, try to boot it (allow it to fail), and then put a different
Dimm in the machine.  For whatever reason that will allow the firmware
update to proceed (for whatever reason).  What you should NOT do is hit the
CUDA or zap the PRAM in this situation.  That makes it much harder to
complete this procedure.
